Imagine. away from the rest of world, city crowd and all the life's daily
puzzles, relaxing on the sun soaked beach under a dreamy blue sky alongside a
whispering ocean. Just two of you, lying down and making the memories for a
lifetime. Picture perfect! Right? Whether it is the honeymoon, anniversary (renewal
of vows anyone?) or just few special days with one another then Maldives is just
perfect for you. The beautiful archipelagos in middle of
Indian Ocean is a glimpse of paradise.
Maldives
has many island resorts but the very first, vibrant, luxurious and perfect vacation
resort is KURUMBA. It is just ten
minutes speed boat ride from the airport on the North Male Atoll in the island
of Vihamanaafushi.

Travel to Kurumba
Male,
Maldives capital is conveniently connected with rest of the world through
multiple airlines.
The Male international airport has an island just for itself. The airport was previously named Hulhule airport after the island Hulhule. We traveled from Colombo, Srilanka. It is a short one hour flight to Male. The green islands spread on vast blue sea looks magnificent from small airplane window. Maldives offer visa-on-arrival for all tourists, and there is absolutely no hassle. The immigration officers are courteous and welcoming, and even provide you tips on Maldives travel. If you are planning to convert to local currency, preferably carry US Dollars as it is easy to convert to local currency. Currencies from south Asian countries may not get preferred treatment.

As
the airport is an island, the only way out is through the sea. Every island
resort has setup transfer points in airport where they gather the guests for
pick up. It is highly recommended to book your resort in advance. Transfers to
resorts from airport are by boat or seaplane. Seaplanes are good for far away
resorts, but are very costly and only operate during daylight hours. Speed
boats are available most of the time and are good for nearby resorts. Kurumba
just being short ride away from airport, we chose speed boat option.
Kurumba
uses a luxury speed boats with a nice cabin and attendants to welcome and carry
your luggage. You can just relax in the cozy cabin, or if you are feeling the
adventure you could go out a face the waves.

The Resort
The
speed boat parks in a beautiful wooden extended wooden pier just outside the
resort. The resort staff is courteous and takes good care of the guests. The
guests are seated in welcome lounge and greeted with coconut sorbet while their
rooms get ready. The staff do not mind if you are there a few hours early than
check-in time. The main lounge is a built as a spacious south eastern style
mansion surrounded by greenery, white sand. Everything is just so beautiful
that you couldn't just wait to start your vacation and get your romance buds
ringing.
Each
room has a terrace just few steps away beach. The path way on the splendid
white sand is made of bricks and lighted for night. The rooms are spacious and
comfortable, with open top bathrooms and small garden. The rooms are located to
have best beach views and provide you with pure solitude. Not the silence you
get in a closed room, but the bliss of solitude in nature.
The
island is surrounded by wave breakers which reduces waves and currents. The
lagoon's depth is also reduced to just 1.5 meters. The reduced depth, white
sand, clear water and sunshine gives water a clear bluish green tinge in day
time, slightly orange during the sunset and dark blue in the night.
It
is not just water and sand, the island is filled with green trees and shrubs
which makes the scenery more beautiful.
Food and Drinks
Kurumba
has food options for all people. There are eight restaurants and three bars
catering to all choices. The complimentary breakfast at Vihamanaa is perhaps
the best way to start your day. The resort also offers different type of meal
plans and you can even plan special dinner in one of restaurants, order it in
your room or have a romantic dinner under the sky on the beach. The beach side
evening bars have live entertainment and offers drinks of all kinds.
The best vacation |
In and around island
Yes,
I agree that lying down on the beach with drink in hand is the best option.
However island also offers much more than that. Kayaking, Paddle boarding,
Snorkeling gear are available for free. You can find small corrals and colorful
fishes inside the lagoon. For the enthusiast, there are also scuba diving, para
sailing and other water sports options are available. The Majaa recreation
center in the island has gymnasium, yoga, tennis and other indoor sports
facilities. In case you have planned something really special like a far away
wedding or renewal of vows, the resort is the perfect place for it. The resort
has convenient setup and plans for it too.
Deep in the Sea
For
the adventurer, there is guided dolphin discovery cruise where we saw school of
dolphins after traveling half an hour deep in Indian ocean. There is also
snorkeling safari and plane safari for those who are interested in different
views of Maldivian archipelago.
Male-The capital |
The Male Tour
Kurumba is not very far from Malé,
capital of Maldives. It is a must do guided tour for those who are interested
in little more than beaches, sea, sun and sand. It is the smallest capital city
in the world just two miles wide. In few hours you could walk and shop end to
end in Male. Even though the city is an island it has no beaches, only sea
walls. The island is small so motor bikes are popular mode of commute. The
complimentary guides were courteous and knowledgeable. The tips at the end of
tour are recommended. Orchid Magu (Magu means Road or street) and Chaandhanee Magu streets are famous for local
handicraft and souvenir shopping. Be ready to bargain, as every shop offer the
same stuff and you may get a good deal. This is also the best place where you
can convert to local currency if you are carrying foreign currency other than
US dollars or Euros.
Too big a list for a leisurely vacation? You will
feel more than satisfied just lying down on the beach doing just nothing with
ocean whispering in your ears in a perfect solitude
